SABC recently attended a launch to announce that Olympic gold medalist swimmer Cameron van der Burgh has joined our drive to reach every child born with clubfoot.
On World Clubfoot Day 3 June, we are proud to announce a new Steps champion Day, South African Olympic gold medallist Cameron van der Burgh. Cameron is a South African hero, having won the 100m breaststroke gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in a new world record time of 58.46 seconds. He has also won countless other world titles and another medal at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
Shaakira has walked the clubfoot journey twice – once when she discovered that her daughter, Zaheerah, was born with clubfoot, and again earlier this year when her son, Mustaqeem, was born.
Khatija’s baby, Ziauddin, was two days old when she found out that he had clubfoot in his left foot.
We first met baby Tshepo in February last year at the STEPS supported clubfoot clinic at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein. The doctor confirmed that Tshepo had been born with one clubfoot. It was the first time that Tshepo’s mom had seen clubfoot as it is not really spoken about in her community. She was very worried that it had been caused by something she had done in her pregnancy.
