When Quinten and Janke Grobler heard the words “bilateral clubfoot” at a prenatal
appointment, their joy of becoming patents was suddenly filled with uncertainty. But
what grew stronger was their determination. From the moment their son was born on
19 September 2024, they committed to learning, adapting and embracing every
challenge that came with their clubfoot journey. Under the care of paediatric
orthopaedic specialist, Dr Ruan Goller in Pretoria, their tiny son began his Ponseti
treatment at just two days old. A path marked by casts, braces, resilience and small
powerful victories.
Dr Goller introduced them to Steps Clubfoot Care and explained how Steps helps
families with support, education and access to care.
As the Groblers went through weekly casts and the long term commitment to
bracing, they felt fierce hope in every correction and immense gratitude for the
medical team and parent support network surrounding them.
It wasn’t long before they felt compelled to give back.
Turning Their Experience Into Action
Quinten describes the moment that changed everything. He saw children at the
orthopaedic clinic who were held back not by their condition, but by financial barriers
that delayed treatment. That was when he decided to combine two great loves,
people and golf, to raise funds so children like his son could access care.
The idea grew into the first ‘Steps Charity Golf Day’. Planning the event for the first
time was daunting, but colleagues at Fourways Group stepped in with enthusiasm,
organising the programme, prizes, raffle and every detail needed to make the day a
success. Their teamwork turned it into an unforgettable experience.
On the morning of the event their friends, colleagues and supporters gather for a
shared purpose Strangers became teammates, laughter echoed across the course
and every swing represented a step closer to helping a child walk with freedom and
confidence.
Although there were challenges like some sponsors who initially committed but
pulled out closer to the event, the joy of witnessing genuine community spirit far
outweighed any setbacks.
The inaugural Steps Charity golf day raised an amazing R58,445.81.
One golfer, touched by the Steps programme and inspired by the Grobler’s story,
made a generous personal donation of R25,000.
This brought the grand total raised to R83,445.81.
Thanks to this incredible support from the golfers, 33 children will be supported
through their life changing clubfoot treatment. The funds will help provide them
access to care and ongoing support through their four year clubfoot journey. 33 children will walk, play and live without pain or limitations thanks to Janke and Quinten.
We are so grateful for parents who give back so that families facing the uncertainty
they felt can find hope, help and community.
Janke says that organising the golf day opened their eyes to the power of
community. They learned that with the right support team and enough lead time,
fundraising does not just raise money, it builds awareness, empathy and hope.
And they already have a date booked to do it all again in 2026! Bigger. Better. And
supporting even more families.
For other parents just starting this journey, the Groblers say:
“You are not alone. Take it one step at a time. Celebrate the little wins. And
remember, clubfoot is only a tiny part of your child’s extraordinary story.”
Thank you, Quinten and Janke for turning your personal challenge into a source of
empowerment for others. For choosing hope and inviting others to walk this journey
with you. When families support other families, extraordinary things can happen.
Every act of kindness, every donation and every event brings children closer to a life
of movement, confidence and possibility.
