A team of orthopaedic surgeons from Tygerberg Hospital Orthopaedic department and alumni are preparing to ride the 2022 Cape Town Cycle Tour for Steps.
Along with the monumental effort to ride the world’s largest timed race, the team are raising R50 000 from sponsors, which will change the lives of 25 children born with clubfoot. They have trained hard as medical professionals to improve patients’ lives, and now they are training hard and have a lot of fun at the same time to support Steps patient-centred support programme for clubfoot patients.
We sat down with one of their team members to find out about why they’re getting involved with Steps.
How did you first learn about Steps?
The first time I heard of Steps was when I went to a Steps clubfoot course in Nelspruit in 2017 with Dr Andre Troskie.
What was a key motivator for choosing Steps and supporting clubfoot patients?
We are very involved in clubfoot management at Tygerberg Hospital. We always see the Step team at our clinic. And we thought it would go for a worthy cause in which Orthopaedics at Tygerberg has an interest in, and we can see the difference you make in our patients’ lives.
What interests / intrigues you most about the work we all do for patients with clubfoot?
I really enjoy seeing the improvement the clubfoot management has in both baby and mother’s lives!
What do you wish more people knew about our cause and the people we help?
When I was a medical student I learnt about clubfoot early in my career. I think the more people are aware in the rural and unreached communities, the earlier they can get help, and the better the outcome will be for all our patients.
What would you say to other people looking to get involved?
I think there are many ways, but financially supporting the cause is a great start for anyone!
Tell us about the journey you are going on. And why are you embarking on it? What do you hope to accomplish with the journey?
We are just a bunch of Orthopods keen for a fun day out on the bike, and riding for a worthy cause like Steps makes it so much more enjoyable!
Keep up with their journey on the Steps social channels.
