Steps is hosting a South African Ponseti Workshop in Mafikeng. The doctors from Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital’s successful Ponseti clinic in Soweto, Johannesburg, will be the faculty.
Following the Ponseti workshop, the clubfoot clinic will be set up to make the Ponseti treatment more easily accessible to babies born in that area.
Currently patients and their carers have to travel long distances for treatment after unsuccessful casting. Some don’t have the means to get to the main centre clinic and children have neglected clubfoot as a result.
Opening a new Ponseti clinic in Mafikeng will help reach more children outside the main centres, and increase the long-term follow-up and success of clubfoot treatment.
