Our Mission continues in 2014 in the birth country of Dr. Ponseti. STEPS will join doctors, NGOs, parents, and other clubfoot champions from around the world in Barcelona for the 3rd International Clubfoot Symposium.
Dr Ignaçio Ponseti studied medicine in Barcelona and the symposium celebrates what would have been Dr. Ignacio Ponseti’s 100th Birthday on June 3, 2014. Dr Ponseti was born in Menorca, Spain. He attended the University of Barcelona where he earned a degree in biology as well as an MD. After his graduation in 1936, Ponseti served as a medic during the Spanish Civil War, treating hundreds of orthopaedic wounds.
In 1941, Dr. Ponseti came to the University of Iowa to finish his residency and joined the faculty of orthopaedic medicine in 1944. Dr. Ponseti developed a non-surgical method to correct clubfoot in infants through gentle manipulation of the feet followed by the application of plaster casts. The success of the Ponseti Method has been well documented through patient studies and research articles and is the recommended treatment for clubfoot.
