Refeletse Monaila’s mother shares their story:
My husband and I brought our week-old baby boy to the Tygerberg Hospital Clubfoot Clinic, filled with a mix of emotions—fear, uncertainty, and hope. We didn’t know what to expect, but from the moment we arrived, we were met with kindness, encouragement, and support from Jane from Steps and the entire clinic staff.
Facing Our Fears
As a new mother, I was overwhelmed with worry. Despite my initial fear and tears, Jane reassured me with words that brought comfort and hope: “Your son will be able to do anything he wants when he’s older, including playing rugby or soccer.” Those words stayed with me, giving me the strength to face the challenges ahead.
The Treatment Journey
Our baby boy began his treatment with five casts, which helped to gradually correct his feet. He also underwent a tenotomy, a procedure that I was anxious about but knew was necessary for his progress. He now wears his clubfoot brace at night and during nap time.
Refeletse has just turned one and recently he’s become a bit unsettled at night, trying to remove the boots. It’s hard as a parent to see him fussing, but Jane advised me to persevere and not give in. She explained that if he doesn’t wear the brace, his feet could regress, undoing all the progress we’ve made. Her guidance has been invaluable, helping us stay strong and focused on the long-term goal.
Gratitude and Hope
Looking back, I am extremely pleased with my son’s progress. The journey was daunting at first, but the support from the clinic staff, Jane, and my husband made all the difference. Every step of the way, we’ve been surrounded by people who genuinely care about our son’s well-being and future.Today, I can confidently say that my son is proof that clubfoot is treatable. We’re grateful for the care and expertise we’ve received, and we’re filled with hope for the bright future ahead.
